Art Fair | Detroit is a three-day event showcasing contemporary affordable works ranging from emerging to mid-career artists, making it accessible to the general public.
The event is a celebration of art, culture, and community, offering diverse programming designed to enrich and inspire. We have provided no specific prompts or themes for the Art Fair, allowing each artist to approach it in their own way and connect to art buyers directly.
We invite everyone to join us in celebrating contemporary art throughout various locations in Detroit. Experience a vibrant array of exhibitions, installations, performances, music, and engaging conversations.
ArtClvb presents Fabricated Garden, a three-person exhibition featuring work by Emily Schnellbacher Bean, Caroline Del Giudice, and Claudia Rivera Plaza.
Working across fabrication, painting, and soft sculpture the works in this exhibiton grasps at ephemeral processes and experiences we encounter and live through regularly. Whether it’s meticulously shaping fabric into the form of a living plant, the attempt to embody the feeling of a specific place through recalling its visual elements, or taking the process of metal fabrication as a manifestation of the way collective thought is formed, each of these artists reflects on translating the intangible.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The Living Room features nine artists whose work offers comfort: Habits, objects, human connections, and imagery that helps to pause the hustle of life. We invite you to slow down, participate in one of the community projects around the gallery, sit and enjoy a few books, and gift yourself a momentary break.
CURATORIAL STATEMENT
The Living Room:
Hygge, koselig, mysigt or mys, cosagach, ikigai, and many more words from languages around the world encapsulate the feeling of comfort, the act of coziness, calm and the present tense of being with close friends on a dark winter night and warding off the blues.
As we approach these winter months in Michigan, the A2AC Gallery transforms into a space to be calm in downtown: Take a deep breath and pause your holiday shopping or that final work assignment before 2023 comes to a close. The gallery’s nine artists offer comfort: Habits, objects, human connections, and imagery that help to pause the hustle.
The A2AC invites you to slow down, participate in one of the community projects around the gallery, sit and enjoy a few books, and gift yourself a momentary break.

What would it look like to modify the way we live in order to lessen the damage that our impact causes to the planet? This exhibition seeks to provide a space for artists and patrons to reflect on and share their relationship with caring for our rapidly changing environment and challenge our diverse community to think critically about the climate through art.

Woman Made Gallery 4th Midwest Open
January 22–February 13, 2021
Juror: Brenda Oelbaum
DESCRIPTION:
CHICAGO — Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is pleased to present its “4th Midwest Open,” juried by Brenda Oelbaum who included the work in a variety of media by 44 women-identified artists from seven Midwest states.
In her statement, Brenda Oelbaum comments: “It was a great honor to be invited to jury the 4th Midwest Open for Woman Made Gallery. America is not the angry white mob the world witnessed on January 6, 2021. Nothing makes that clearer than one look at the artists and art submitted to this exhibition. We are a rich tapestry of immigrants. We are colorful, unique and speak in a powerful feminist voice. It was this diversity that impressed me the most as I went back and forth through hundreds of entries. Although the locus of the show was the Midwest region, I think there were elements that touched every continent on the planet. This was evidenced in the cultural backgrounds of the artists, the mix of styles and mediums used, from traditional craft to new media and social practice art. It was from this wide array of styles that I was able to select works that illustrate the richness that is the heart and core of this country.” – Brenda Oelbaum
Exhibiting Artists: Gina Alicea, Jaime Andersen, Aodan, Helena Baka, Ginny Baughman, Emily Schnellbacher Bean, Rosalinda Cabrera, Claudia Carlson, Cathie Crawford, Patricia DaRif, Alexis Doerr, Helen Geglio, Nina Ghanbarzadeh, Christine Giancola, Lynn Hill, Doina Iacob, Laurel Izard, Natalie Jackson, Lindsay Johnson, Rebecka Kann, Jennifer Kaplan, Jennifer Kling, Laila Kujala, Meg Lagodzki, Betty Jane Lau, Britni Mara, Jane M. Mason, Monika Meler, Teri Miller, Leah Mitchell, Niki Nolin, Joan Painter Jones, Louise Pappageorge, Mabi Ponce de Leon, Nirmal Raja, Liese Ricketts, Anna Segner, Gabriela Sincich, Jamie Tubbs, Gwynneth VanLaven, Mel Watkin, Sandra Wilcoxon, Qianwen Yu, Chunbo Zhang.
Juror: Brenda Oelbaum is a feminist, multimedia, conceptual artist, working in whatever medium best translates the intended message. Increasingly her work has become political and ecologically minded, repurposing objects found, donated or bought on the resale market objects in her artwork. From diet books, to piggy banks and now unwanted seascape paintings, Oelbaum finds inspiration in hunting for the weird and unloved. Buying antiques and collectibles and repurposing them is an ecologically sound practice.
Classically trained in painting and drawing at the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto Canada, her work has been shown in South Korea, Iceland, and Mainland China, and throughout the contiguous United States. Her Venus of Willendorf Project which focus’ on the multibillion-dollar diet industry has been studied and written about internationally from Belgium to India many countries in Latin America. Brenda holds a MA in Gallery Administration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and was the founding President of the Michigan Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art and is the Michigan Representative for the Feminist Art Project. From 2014 to 2016 she held the post of President of the National Women’s Caucus for Art. When she is not working on her own work in her studio in Dexter, MI she is helping to promote women in the arts through her affiliation with the WCA through her vast knowledge of the art and gallery industry, attained by living and working in Soho as a ‘Gallerina’ and Archivist for the estate of May Wilson 1905-1986, and curating exhibitions for the WCA Membership regionally and nationally. Helping others is a great way to build a like-minded community no matter where you are. You don’t need to be on either coast to be a successful exhibiting artist. https://www.brendaoart.com/

"This is a group of visual artists who take inspiration from observation. However, the resultant work is not always representational; rather, the commonality among these artists’ practices is an obsessive attention to detail. In looking at these works, the viewer’s gaze is drawn to unexpected sub-images, or to inventive uses of material to mimic reality."

Artist Statement
“‘No More Night’ emerged from my interest in the preservation of starlight. In addition to poor aesthetics, excessive energy use, and the disruption of ecosystems, studies have shown light pollution to have an adverse effect on our health and psychology. Like ‘No More Night’, much of my studio practice is an exploration of man’s intimate relationship and dependency on nature. I express these observations through sewn soft sculpture and installation. Yet, rather than create work that is pessimistic and disparaging, I highlight man’s intimate relationship and dependency through pieces that are whimsical, humorous, and engaging. ‘No More Night’ in particular, is a tongue and cheek illustration of an artificial light canopy in place of the stars.”

Philadelphia Sculpture Gym and Gigantic Sequins paired writers & sculptors for a January 2015 gallery show called IMPOSSIBLE INSTRUCTIONS. For this show, writers wrote a piece (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, hybrid) that served as instructions for the artist to follow. Following these, the artist created a work of sculpture. The show will be up for all of January, and there will be a reading on the opening night of the show. The final pieces will be collected into a very limited edition chapbook.
The opening is Friday, January 9th from 6pm-9pm, with a reading by the writers at 7:30pm.
